NEWS ON THE IMPACT OF MAA ARTICLE ON MINOAN STAR SAILORS

A recent article in MAA has been highlighted in the Heritage Daily and in Historia National Geographic The research article entitled “Minoan star sailors: linking palace orientations with maritime trade routes and celestial navigation” by Alessandro Berio published in Mediterranean Archaeology and Archaeometry Vol. 22, No 3, (2022), pp. 149-177 (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.7388258), indicates that the Minoan civilization may have used "star trails" to navigate. This recent study carried out by the Italian archaeoastronomer at the University of Wales suggests that the ancient Minoans used "star trails" to trace their navigation routes and thus be able to safely reach all corners of the Mediterranean. Dr Berio examined the orientation of the great Minoan palaces (whose main characteristic are the large rectangular courtyards, generally oriented from north to south on the long axis ) along the navigation directions. The study showed that the palaces were oriented towards the rising and setting of certain stars that the ancient Minoan sailors used to orient themselves.
