Therefore, the translation of geographical names has always been regarded as an important part of novel translation. Geographical names generally focus on reference, usually translated in transliteration; However, in the novel, for the purpose of highlighting themes and shaping characters, geographical names have pragmatic functions and cultural connotations in addition to their referential functions. Transliteration is only one of many English translation techniques, and sometimes it only appears as an auxiliary means. According to the fictitious and real characteristics of geographical names in novels, this paper makes a comprehensive analysis and discussion on the cultural translation strategies of geographical names in the novel Journey to the West from three different perspectives, namely semantic, pragmatic and aesthetic.
